The Story Behind Badger Foodie
Hi! My name is Dan, and I am the person behind Badger Foodie. I live in Wisconsin with my wife and two young children.
I’m a Father, Veteran, Social Worker, and Eagle Scout. I love Wisconsin and enjoy food!
I don’t consider myself to be a food snob by any means, and you won’t get that feeling by reading my writing. I write what I feel and am not trying to impress the professional food critics, readers, or writers. My time in the kitchen tends to be preparing my family’s fairly simple comfort dishes and experimenting with new recipes.
I suppose I can say that I have some experience in the food industry and that I was “professionally trained”…
You see, when the Boy Scout camp that I attended as a youth, Ed Bryant Scout Reservation (formerly Camp Castle Rock), built a new $1.5 million dining facility with a commercial grade kitchen, I jumped on the opportunity, and spent three summers running the kitchen operations and helping with off-season events.
I had so much fun preparing food for large groups, but knew my career path wouldn’t support working at the camp every summer, that I decided to enlist in the Army National Guard. Against my recruiters advice I signed on as a Food Service Specialist (92G).
I enjoyed the training I received; however, I was assigned to a small company based out of Madison, that didn’t have a kitchen! My dream to cook for large groups one weekend a month (yes, you can laugh at that), was shattered when my job consisted of placing catering orders and picking up subs.
I quickly changed my job in the military!
